There are three main ways to make your motorbike headlamp brighter. The first is to replace your worn or older bulbs with new bulbs (for LED headlights, you will need to replace the headlamp in its entirety). The second is to clean and restore your headlights, which is also the easiest and cheapest option. This simply requires a restoration kit for the inner working of your headlight, or a bit of soap and water for a fogged-up lens. You can also check our cleaning guide, below. Finally, you can upgrade your lights to motorcycle LED headlights or even HID headlights, both of which are considerably brighter than traditional, factory halogen headlamps and give a much greater projection of light.
In order to convert your standard headlight into an LED headlight, you should first check the bulb type you require, which can be found in your manufacturer’s handbook. Once this has been found, you should then be able to purchase the right LED conversion kit online. When this arrives, follow step 1-3 in the above guide to removing your headlight bulb, before removing the headlight itself and removing the wiring attached the headlight. Then, you should be able to replace your bulb and wiring using the kit you will have bought, online. Don’t forget to replace your headlight carefully and test the effectiveness of your light before moving on.
Cleaning the outside of your headlights can be a breeze, since a lot of the time the cloudiness is from dirt and debris from the road, or even due to UV rays. In case of the latter, it’s usually preferred that you buy an “official” restoration kit, although you can shift the damage somewhat using 2000 grit sandpaper. Just be sure to never work in circular motions and simply move back and forth, before polishing your lens fully. Surprisingly, cleaning the inside of your lens is actually easier, since you don’t have to concern yourself with the damage of UV rays from this point. All you’ll need is some rubbing alcohol or ethanol and a good quality cloth. Then you an wipe away the mist and dirt before replacing your lens.
Each bulb will have its own expected lifespan, and you can expect to lose some brightness before they fully die out. Anywhere between 30,000 – 80,000 hours is to be expected, although this can be lowered depending on the temperature, any shocks or general wear and tear. As a rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to change your motorbike headlamp every 18 – 24 months.
